South Grant Park Garage

This reconstruction was comprised of a 3-level, 600,000 sf underground parking garage with 1,200 spaces.

The garage extends underneath Michigan Ave. and Jackson Blvd. and abuts the Art Institute of Chicago. The garage’s existing walls and roof remained in place while the structural decks and roadways were replaced. Because all of the work was performed underground, the 16,000 yards of concrete and 2,000 tons of reinforcing steel were brought through two 30′ x 30′ access holes.

The garage access ramps were reconfigured to the center of Michigan Ave. to create a more efficient layout for motorist and pedestrians. New electrical, ventilation, fire protection, plumbing, and life safety systems, along with new closed circuit television systems, intercoms and payment systems were installed. The garage lobbies and offices were also renovated.
