POSITION: Chief Estimator - Heavy/Highway

This position is part of the infrastructure (highway and heavy civil) division. The chief estimator will plan, coordinate, and supervise the infrastructure division’s estimating program and will provide technical and administrative direction. The chief estimator is fully responsible for the scope and quality of division’s estimating work as well as major profit and loss responsibility that influence corporate success or failure. This position reports to the senior vice president and president.

As chief estimator, you will be responsible for:
  • Managing and administering department functions including staffing, wage reviews, work assignments, and performance evaluations. 
  • Assisting executives and project management to determine what types of projects to bid and bid strategies and techniques. 
  • Managing entire estimating process and preparation of unit price bids. 
  • Reviewing all final estimate packages to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to formal quotation. Recommending and implementing changes as necessary. 
  • Participating in presentations to corporate management and clients. May be responsible for “closing the sale". 
  • Providing technical assistance in negotiating contracts, change orders, and other project documentation as required. 
  • Assisting in the preparation of studies, materials and methods, recommendations, and cost estimates as required.
  • Promoting a positive image of McHugh to subcontractors and gather information from subcontractors that is advantageous for McHugh in bid preparation.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the general public.

To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • BS, engineering or equivalent combinations of technical training and/or related experience. 
  • Advanced management or technical training preferred. 
  • Extensive (10 plus years) experience in road, bridge, and heavy civil estimating and related functions plus thorough knowledge of corporate objectives impacting estimating, estimating strategies and techniques, and construction contracts required. 
  • Excellent organizational, supervisory and decision making/problem solving skills essential. 
  • Applicant should be experienced in quantity takeoffs and pricing for the following trades: excavation, piling, concrete, and structural steel.
  • Thorough knowledge of MS Office, On Center OST, and MS Project, and HCSS software.
